Cleaning and Maintenance

Cleaning your Ozobot’s wheels regularly is essential to maintaining proper function and operational longevity. Simply roll the robot's wheels several times on a clean white paper to help absorb the grease buildup - that's it!
Ozobot has a friction drivetrain and may start experiencing mechanical difficulties over time due to a build up of grease and dirt in its chassis. Gently roll Ozobot's wheels over a sheet of plain paper to improve its traction and avoid excessive contamination of the drivetrain.
No, please be careful when using Ozobot around water or other liquid.
If you have a large-screen iPad or Android tablet (9 inches or larger), go to the Ozobot TuneUp screen on one of our app and select the option to tune motors. Follow the instructions on the screen.
Ozobot's sensors are sensitive to ambient light. If your Ozobot is experiencing difficulties operating in bright environments, try to move away from direct sunlight, a close proximity to a window or a bright lamp.

Paper and Markers

Ozobots rely on optical sensors to explore their environment. For their optimal function, they need to be calibrated before each use and every time you switch from paper to tablet. To calibrate on paper, draw a 1 ½ inch solid dot with a black sharpie and follow calibration instructions. If you find your Ozobot is still having trouble following lines, try calibrating to the tablet and then back on paper.
We recommend using our OzoCode Markers as they were designed specifically for Ozobot. Ozobot will also work with other brands of markers as long as they are a thicker, chisel tip marker that allows you to draw lines and codes that are about 0.4” (6 mm) in width. The main colors to use are red, light blue, light green, and black. Ozobot may not read the colors consistently if they are too dark or light.

Apps

Our apps are supported on select iOS and Android devices.

The Ozobot app is supported on all iPads except the 1st generation device (iOS 6.0 or newer). On Android, the main requirements for the Ozobot app to be available on your tablet are: screen size of 9” or bigger, camera availability and an operating system of 3.2 or higher. If your tablet does not have one of these features then you may not be able to download the Ozobot app.

OzoGroove is a universal iOS and Android app and it is supported on both smartphones and tablets. The camera and OS version requirements are similar to the Ozobot app.

*note for iPad mini users: While the app may download to the device, the screen size is too small for Ozobot to be able to consistently sense the scaled down lines and read the OzoCode commands. Because of this, we suggest that you do not download the Ozobot app on this device.
There are two types of color codes. To learn more, visit our color code language page.
Make sure that your screen brightness is set to 100%. If you are still having issues, go to the Ozobot TuneUp screen on one of our apps and click on the option to “Calibrate Sensors.” Follow the directions on the screen.

*note regarding operating problems on select Android devices: Certain lower end Android devices use PWM technology to control the screen brightness (the screen intermittently switches to black at a frequency not detectable by a human eye). Since Ozobot sensors sample the screen 150 times per second, such black flashes confuse the robot and can cause problems for both line following and color code detection. Turning the screen brightness to 100% solves this issue on some devices, but on select devices this problem persists making them incompatible with Ozobot.
